Chinese-Spec vs European-Spec Cars: Why Domestic Chinese Versions Are Different – and How We Adapt Them for Europe
Why Chinese domestic cars from brands like Zeekr, Geely, Chery and BYD often come with richer equipment and more advanced tech than their official European counterparts – and how Myron Trade / MyronCars adapts these “Chinese-spec” vehicles for European charging, language, software and road regulations.
Intro: why this comparison matters
My name is Abdullayev Marad, director of Myron Trade and founder of
MyronCars. I have been working in China for more than 15 years, and for the last
five years our team has specialised in exporting Chinese cars to Europe – including
brands such as Zeekr, Geely, Chery, BYD and others.
One of the most common questions we get from clients in Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, France, Poland and
Lithuania is:
“What is the difference between a Chinese domestic car and the official European version?”
Short answer: in most cases the Chinese domestic version is better equipped and more advanced, but
it also needs adaptation for Europe (charging, language, software, sometimes hardware).
Below I explain why this happens, show it on the example of Zeekr 001 and Zeekr 7X, and describe
how Myron Trade / MyronCars prepares these cars for European roads.
1. Why Chinese domestic cars are usually “more loaded”
In China, local brands fight in a brutally competitive market:
- dozens of electric and hybrid models in the same price segment;
- constant price wars;
- customers who expect maximum technology for their money.
As a result, many Chinese EVs and hybrids for the domestic market come with:
- larger batteries and more powerful motors;
- bigger and brighter screens;
- stronger performance (more horsepower, faster 0–100 km/h);
- richer interior options – Nappa leather, massage seats, rear entertainment;
- more advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).
Export versions for Europe, the USA or the Middle East are often based on the same platform, but:
- with simplified batteries and charging;
- fewer extreme-performance versions;
- a shorter list of options;
- sometimes smaller wheels, fewer cameras, simpler interior.
The reason is the opposite: in Europe manufacturers focus on homologation, regulations, fleet CO₂ targets,
insurance classes and cost control. The car must fit neatly into the existing line-up and price structure.
2. Zeekr 7X: Chinese version vs European version
Zeekr 7X is a good example where the base technology is similar, but the
Chinese car is richer in options.
2.1. What is the same
Both the Chinese and European Zeekr 7X share:
- the SEA platform with high-voltage architecture;
- powerful electric drivetrains – single-motor RWD and dual-motor AWD;
- battery packs around 75 kWh and 100 kWh;
- fast DC charging from 10 to 80 % in roughly 10–15 minutes on a high-power station;
- a modern safety structure with multiple airbags and electronic assistants.
On the brochure level they look almost identical.
2.2. Where the Chinese 7X is stronger
On the Chinese domestic market, Zeekr pushes the 7X much further:
- early access to newer model years with updated hardware (for example, higher-voltage versions and larger battery packs);
- variants with longer range on the Chinese CLTC cycle;
- more “toys” in the interior:
- front Stargate LED display integrated into the nose of the car,
- rear 13-inch OLED screens for passengers,
- intelligent child seat with extra airbags,
- emergency window-breaking button,
- extended seat functionality: heating, ventilation, massage, memory for all seats.
In simple words: the Chinese 7X is the “fat” configuration with everything possible installed.
This is exactly what attracts many buyers who import Zeekr directly from China.
2.3. Where the European 7X wins
The European Zeekr 7X is more conservative, but has its own advantages:
- full EU type approval and 5-star safety level under European regulations;
- CCS2 / Type 2 charging interface and seamless work with European public charging networks;
- navigation, online services and voice control adapted to European markets;
- software that is fully localised for Europe and compatible with local legal requirements.
So the choice here is simple: the Chinese car wins in luxury and gadgets, the
European car wins in plug-and-play usability.
3. Zeekr 001: big gap between China and Europe
With Zeekr 001 the contrast is even more visible. The Chinese 001 is already one
step into the future, while the European 001 remains more conservative.
3.1. Chinese Zeekr 001
Newer Chinese versions offer:
- switch to 800-volt architecture for very high charging power;
- battery packs around 95–100 kWh, and in limited series even up to 140 kWh;
- very fast DC charging – roughly 10–12 minutes from 10 to 80 % on the newest Chinese superchargers;
- extended range: up to 750 km in regular trims and up to around 1000 km in the top long-range editions (Chinese test cycles);
- extreme performance variant Zeekr 001 FR with four motors, over 1,200 hp, 0–100 km/h close to 2 seconds, upgraded brakes and suspension;
- latest-generation smart driving system with lidar, a large set of cameras and radars, and powerful computing platforms.
This is often not available in official European showrooms.
3.2. European Zeekr 001
The European 001 focuses on stability and certification:
- 400-volt architecture and a single main battery option around 100 kWh;
- DC charging power typically up to 200 kW, 10–80 % in about 30 minutes on fast chargers;
- power limited to around 400 kW, 0–100 km/h in the 3.5–3.8 s range;
- real WLTP range around 585–620 km, depending on version;
- strong safety performance and full set of standard European driver-assistance functions.
In short: Chinese Zeekr 001 is one generation ahead in technology, with more battery choices, more
performance options and more advanced ADAS. The European 001 is simpler but fully aligned with EU
regulations.
4. Other brands: Chery, Geely and others
The same pattern is visible across many brands:
-
Chery: domestic Tiggo and Exeed models often have larger screens, more ADAS functions, more seat
adjustments, extra sound insulation, ambient lighting and more complete safety packages than their European equivalents. -
Geely and Lynk & Co: in China they offer high-power engines and top trims with rich equipment
that are not always exported. -
Other EV brands: Chinese versions often receive new battery chemistries, longer-range packs and
new software features months or years before export markets.
This is why many clients in Europe decide to buy a Chinese-spec car directly from China: they
simply get more car for the same money.
5. Technical challenges when a Chinese car arrives in Europe
However, importing a domestic-market car is not only about advantages. There are
important technical differences that must be handled correctly.
5.1. Charging port and standards
Most Chinese EVs and plug-in hybrids for the domestic market use the GB/T charging standard:
- one connector for AC charging,
- a separate connector for DC fast charging.
In Europe, the standard is CCS2 (Combined Charging System, Type 2):
- a Type 2 connector for AC,
- a combined CCS2 connector for DC and AC.
This means:
- a Chinese GB/T car cannot plug directly into most European fast chargers;
- AC charging also may not be compatible with many public stations.
Solutions include:
- professional conversion of the charging port to CCS2,
- installation of high-quality adapters,
- or using home chargers specifically configured for the Chinese standard.
5.2. Software, language and online services
Chinese domestic cars are sold with:
- system language Chinese by default;
- voice assistant that understands mainly Mandarin;
- navigation, maps and apps built for China;
- Chinese online services and eSIMs that do not always work in the EU.
European versions, on the other hand, come with:
- multilingual support (English, German, French, Italian, Polish etc.);
- voice control in European languages;
- local maps, traffic data and streaming services;
- OTA updates adapted to European law.
Without adaptation, a Chinese-spec Zeekr, Chery or Geely in Europe may:
- speak only Chinese,
- show Chinese maps,
- not support local services or emergency functions.
5.3. Homologation and lights
For some models, lights, reflectors or rear fog lamps differ between Chinese and European standards. There can also
be differences in:
- rear turn signal colour,
- daytime running light logic,
- presence of rear fog light.
These details matter during technical inspection and registration.
6. How Myron Trade / MyronCars prepares Chinese cars for Europe
Because we export cars from China every day, we built a full adaptation package for clients who
want the richer Chinese specification but full European usability.
6.1. Hardware adaptation before export
Before the car leaves China, we can:
- install a second set of wheels with winter tyres suitable for European conditions;
- change or modify the charging hardware so that the car works with CCS2 / Type 2 in Europe, or provide professional adapter solutions;
- add European-spec lighting elements (for example, rear fog light, correct indicators) where necessary;
- install additional accessories: tow bar, mudguards, roof racks, dashcams, protective film.
This means the car arrives in Europe already prepared for local roads and seasons.
6.2. Software and language configuration
For many models (including popular Zeekr, BYD, Chery and Geely cars) we can:
- switch the system language from Chinese to English or other available languages;
- configure voice control to work in English where supported;
- update maps and navigation to European regions;
- adjust units (km/h, °C, consumption in kWh/100 km etc.);
- deactivate or adapt China-only online services.
When full system re-flash is possible, we prepare the car so that the owner feels
at home from day one.
6.3. Documentation and support
We also:
- provide a complete set of export documents and translations;
- share technical information for your customs broker and inspection centre;
- consult on typical requirements in Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, France, Poland, Lithuania and other countries.
The goal is simple: even if you choose a Chinese domestic specification with maximum equipment, you should
not worry about compatibility or registration.
7. Why many European buyers choose Chinese-spec cars
Summarising:
-
Chinese domestic cars like Zeekr 001, Zeekr 7X, Zeekr X, Chery Tiggo, Geely crossovers and sedans
often have better equipment, higher performance and more advanced tech than their official European counterparts. -
For similar money you can get:
- bigger battery and longer range,
- stronger motors and faster acceleration,
- more screens and comfort features,
- richer ADAS and safety options.
The trade-off is that you need to solve charging, software and certification issues.
This is exactly the area where Myron Trade / MyronCars works every day.
8. Conclusion: richer Chinese spec, European comfort with Myron
If you are considering importing a Zeekr 001 or 7X, a Chery or
Geely in full Chinese specification to Europe, you do not have to choose between
equipment and usability:
- you can take the better-equipped Chinese version,
- and we will adapt it for European roads, chargers and languages.
Our team in China checks the car, arranges container shipping, handles export documents and performs all agreed
upgrades before the vehicle leaves the port. When the car arrives in Europe, you receive a
machine with Chinese-level options but European-level convenience.
If you want to discuss a specific model or configuration, send us the link to the Chinese listing and the country
where you plan to register the car. We will analyse the difference between Chinese and European trim
levels and prepare a clear plan of adaptation for your market.
